Once.... once upon a time....

Over and over again,

Martha would tell us her stories,

In the hazel glen.

Hers were those clear grey eyes

You watch and the story seems

Told by their beautifulness

Tranquil as dreams.

She would sit with her two slim hands

Clasped round her banded knees;

While we on our elbows

And stared at ease.

Her voice, her narrow chin,

Her grave small lovely head,

Seemed half the meaning

Of the words she said.

'मार्था' नामक प्रस्तुत इस कविता को कवि वेल्टर डि ला मेयर अपने बचपन को स्मरण करते हुए लिखते हैं। वह बचपन के उस समय की घटना को याद करते हैं जब वह अपने दोस्तों के साथ मिलकर पिंगल की संकीर्ण घाटी के शांत और एकांत वातावरण में मार्था नामक एक युवती लड़की के द्वारा कही गई कहानियों को सुनते थे। उस स्थान पर पत्तों के बीच से छनकर मन्द हरी रोशनी मार्था और बच्चों पर पड़ती थी।

मार्था बहुत सुन्दर लड़की थी। "एक समय की बात है.... " ऐसा कहते हुए वह अपनी कहानी शुरू करती थी। वह पिंगल की घाटी में बार-बार अपनी कहानियाँ कहती रहती थी। उसकी आँखें स्वच्छ और भूरी थी।उसकी आँखें ऐसा मोहित करने वाली थी कि सुनने वाले श्रोता पूरी तरह से मोहित हो जाते थे और उस समय उसके द्वारा कही गई कहानियाँ सबके हृदय में सपने के समान घुस जाती थी।

वह अपनी पतली- पतली हाथों से मुड़े हुए घुटनों को जकड़ कर बैठती थी जबकि हम ( बच्चे) मुड़े हुए घुटनों पर कोहनी रखकर बैठ जाते थे और आराम से उसे घूरते रहते । उसकी मीठी आवाज, संकीर्ण नुकीली ठुड्डी और छोटा, सुंदर और गंभीर सिर इतने प्रभावशाली थे कि उसके द्वारा कही गई कहानियों का आधा अर्थ समझा देते हैं। बच्चे उसकी कहानियों में मग्न हो जाते थे।
