आप सभी जानते हैं कि इस वर्ष महालया 17 सितम्बर को थी परन्तु दुर्गा पूजा महालया से एक माह देर से प्रारंभ होगी। क्या आपने सोचा कि आखिर इस वर्ष ऐसा क्यों हुआ? 

सबसे पहले जानते हैं महालया के बारे में-

महालया क्या है? 

आश्विन कृष्ण पक्ष का अंतिम दिन यानी अमावस्या को महालया मनाई जाती है । आश्विन कृष्ण पक्ष को पितृ पक्ष कहते हैं क्योंकि इन दिनों पितरों की शांति के लिए उनका तर्पण किया जाता है। पितृ पक्ष के बाद देवी पक्ष आता है यानी माँ दुर्गा की पूजा अर्चना के दिन आते हैं और यह महालया देवी का आह्वान करने का दिन है । 

इस साल महालया से एक माह बाद दुर्गा पूजा क्यों है? 

सामान्यतः दुर्गा पूजा की महाष्टमी महालया से एक सप्ताह के बाद होती है पर इस साल इन दोनों दिनों के बीच का अन्तर 37 दिनों का है । इस वर्ष महाषष्ठी 22 अक्टूबर, महासप्तमी 23 अक्टूबर, महाष्टमी 24 अक्टूबर, महानवमी 25 अक्टूबर और विजयादशमी 26 अक्टूबर को है । 

इस वर्ष महालया से दुर्गा पूजा की महाष्टमी के बीच के 37 दिन होने का कारण--

आप पंचाग की माने तो इसके अनुसार महालया और दुर्गा पूजा के बीच इतने अधिक दिनों का अंतर का मुख्य कारण 'मलमास' है। 

 इस वर्ष मलमास 18 सितम्बर से 16 अक्टूबर ( बंगाली माह आश्विन) तक है। मलमास में कोई भी पूजा या शुभ कार्य नहीं होते हैं जिसके कारण दुर्गा पूजा में इतनी देरी।

मलमास क्या है? 

आप सभी जानते हैं कि एक वर्ष में 365 दिन 6 घंटे होते हैं, ये सूर्य कैलेंडर के आधार पर है । परंतु चंद्र कैलेंडर के आधार पर 354 दिन होते हैं। ये 11 दिनों का अंतर हर तीन या चार वर्षों में एक अतिरिक्त माह के रूप में आता है। उस वर्ष बारह माह के स्थान पर तेरह माह होते हैं । इस  अतिरिक्त माह को अधिमास, अधिक मास, मलमास या पुरुषोत्तम कहा जाता है।

 First of all, know about Mahalaya-

 What is mahalaya?

 Mahalaya is celebrated on the last day of Ashwin Krishna Paksha i.e. Amavasya.  Ashwin Krishna Paksha is called as Pitru Paksha because these days they are offered to the ancestors for their peace.  After Pitru Paksha comes the Goddess Paksha i.e. the worship of Mother Durga comes on the day of Archana and it is the day to invoke Devi Durga.

 Why is Durga Puja one month after Mahalaya this year?

 Normally, the Mahashtami of Durga Puja takes place after one week from Mahalaya but this year the difference between these two days is 37 days.  This year  Mahashashthi is on 22 October, Mahasaptami 23 October, Mahashtami 24 October, Mahanavami 25 October and Vijayadashami 26 October.

 The reason for 37 days between Mahalaya to Durga Puja from Mahalaya this year-

 According to Panchag, 'Malmas' is the main reason for the difference of so many days between Mahalaya and Durga Puja.

  This year Malamas is from 18 September to 16 October (Bengali month Ashwin).  There are no pujas or auspicious works in the Malamas due to which the Durga Puja is so delayed.

 What is Malamas?

 You all know that there are 365 days 6 hours in a year, this is based on the Sun calendar.  But there are 354 days based on the lunar calendar.  This difference of 11 days comes as an additional month every three or four years.  In that year, there are thirteen months instead of twelve months.  This extra month is called Adhimas, Adhik Maas, Malamas or Purushottam.
