The Missile Man Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam
A.P.J Abdul Kalam was born on 15 October, 1931 at Rameshwaram in Tamilnadu. His full name was Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam. His father Jainulabdeen was a boat owner and imam of a local mosque. He learnt honesty and self discipline from his father. His mother Ashiamma was a housewife. He learnt kindness and faith in goodness from mother. He was the youngest of four brothers and one sister. He listened the stories of the Ramayana and the life history of Prophet at bedtime. At an early age, he sold newspapers to supplement his family's income.

One day when Kalam was in his fifth standard, a new teacher came to his class. Kalam used to wear a cap which marked him as a Muslim. He always sat in the front row with his Hindu friends who wear the sacred thread. The teacher could not digest a Hindu sitting with a Muslim. Kalam was asked to sit on the back bench. Both friends felt very sad. After school they went home and told their parents about the incident. Their parents met the teacher and told him not to spread such feeling in children. Since childhood Kalam had love and respect for all religions.

Kalam is known for his simple lifestyle. He never owned a television. Books were his best company. He enjoyed writing Tamil poetry and playing the veena. He was a vegetarian. He used to get up early and sleep late at night to work more. His dream was to be a fighter pilot. It was not fulfilled that time. He was placed ninth in the qualifiers and there were only eight position in the Indian Air Force.

After completing his study, Dr. Kalam started his career as a scientist in 1960. He designed a small helicopter for the Indian Army. Later on he took up the responsibility of developing Agni and Prithvi missiles. his success in his field made him the Missile man of India.

The Pokhran- II nuclear test was carried under him in 1998. It made India a nuclear power country on the map of the world. He was recipient of several awards. He got India's highest civilian honour "The Bharat Ratna" in 1997.

Dr. Kalam was elected the 11th President of India in 2002. He was the first scientist and the first bachelor to occupy Rashtrapati Bhavan. During his term as President, he was affectionately known as the People's President. After serving a term of 5 years, he return to his civilian life. He wrote several books. He became a visiting professor of several institutions and universities.

Dr. Kalam felt comfortable in the company of young people. He particularly liked high school student. He wanted to share his experiences with them. He wanted to prepare them to work for the country. He wanted to make India a developed nation by the year 2020. He drew an action plan to make India a superpower.

On 27 July 2015 Dr. Kalam traveled to Shillong to deliver a lecture. He collapsed only after five minutes into his lecture. He was rushed to nearby hospital. Doctors confirmed that he had breathed his last. He Departed but left his footprints on the sands of time. India can be a developed nation if Indians follow his footprints.
