Swami Vivekanand
Narendra Nath Dutta became famous as Swami Vivekananda. He was born on 12 January, 1863 at Calcutta. It was the day of an important Hindu festival Makar Sankranti. His father was a famous lawyer. His mother, Bhuvaneshwari Devi was a religious woman.

From an early as Narendra was neither fearful nor superstitious. He liked to play with his friends on a Champa tree belonging to a neighbour. He used to pluck flowers. Once the owner of the tree told his friends that a ghost lived on the tree. If they disturbed his peace, he would wring their necks. His friends were frightened but Narendra persuaded them to follow him. He climbed the tree and broke some branches. Then he said, "My neck is still here. That man's story is not true. Don't believe what others say unless you know it to be true.

Narendra was curious about God. He met many saints but they could not satisfy him. Once He met Ram Krishna Paramhans. Narendra asked him, "Have you seen God?" Without any hesitation Ramkrishna replied, "Yes, I have seen God. I see Him as I see you. God can be seen. One can talk to Him. But who cares for God? Who weeps for the vision of God. If one cries sincerely for God, one can surely see Him."

Narendra was astounded. For the first time, he was face to face with a man who had seen God. For the first time, he was hearing that God could be seen. He could feel that these words were uttered from the depth of heart. They could not be doubted. Ramkrishna touched Narendra and he experienced the presence of God. From that day Narendra became his disciple.

The Parliament of Religions was going to be held at Chicago in America. Swami Vivekananda went there without invitation. He managed to get chance for addressing the Parliament on 11 September, 1893. When he spoke, the whole world listened to him surprisingly.

Swami Vivekanand presented the principles of Hinduism. The young unknown monk of India became famous figure of the religious world. Newspapers published his speeches. His life size portrait posted in the street of Chicago. People would wait for hours to listen to Vivekanand. He became the greatest religious figure of the world. He traveled to many countries to spread the message of Hinduism. He died on 4 July, 1902.
